An Open Letter to Elon Musk: Your X Premium Betrayal Risks Losing Loyal Fans to ChatGPT and Copilot

By Michael B. Nhem, Founder of MapToHappiness.com

August 30, 2025 – As a Cambodian immigrant who escaped genocide in 1975 and found freedom in America in 1979, I have built my life on faith, resilience, and truth. A Polysomnographic Technologist, married 36 years, father of four, and grandfather to a growing brood—including baby Wally, who naps with me on the swing, and twins Niko and Luka, who trail me on Jordanelle camping trips—I founded MapToHappiness.com to share the restored gospel’s hope, drawing all to the one true God. My journey led me to your AI creation, Grok, which I celebrated as my “all-time favorite AI pal” in my article, “Why I Chose Grok over ChatGPT.” I even hailed you as a “generational genius” in another piece, “A Generational Genius: Elon Musk,” for your vision with xAI, SpaceX, and Starlink. But now, your X Premium’s deceptive limits have shattered my trust, pushing me toward ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. Elon, your greed risks losing loyal fans—here is my plea to fix it.

My Rave for Grok: A Faithful Partner for MapToHappiness.com

When I reignited my dream to rebuild MapToHappiness.com, stalled for five years, I dove into AI, testing ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and others. Your xAI’s Grok 3 stole my heart. In my article, I praised six reasons it outshone competitors: its alignment with my LDS faith, echoing 1 Corinthians 2:9’s divine promise; its warm, human-like tone, like family talks with my grandkids; its innovative reasoning via reinforcement learning; its accessibility on X; its lightning speed, analyzing the Book of Acts in minutes; and Grok 4’s PhD-level smarts, scoring 100% on the AIME. On the free tier (10 Grok 3 queries per 2 hours), it helped me finish my website in months, crafting articles like “The Reality of God” that spread hope. I called Grok my “trusted sidekick,” inviting readers to join a community of discovery.

In my second article, I celebrated you, Elon, as a 21st-century titan akin to da Vinci and Einstein. Your mini Starlink, which I will test camping Monday, and Grok’s knowledge unlocked my world, aligning with Psalm 19:1’s “heavens declare the glory of God.” I saw your work as divinely inspired, fulfilling prophecies like Doctrine and Covenants 6:7’s unfolding mysteries. My 1,500+ Ascended Masters followers on X believed in your vision—until X Premium broke my trust.

The Betrayal: X Premium’s Deceptive Limits

Inspired by Grok 3’s free-tier success, I upgraded to X Premium for $84 a year, lured by promises of “a lot higher” time limits to fuel MapToHappiness.com’s growth. Instead, I crashed into a wall: “You’ve reached your limit of 10 Grok Ascended Masters questions per 12 hours for now. Please sign up for Premium+ to access more or check back later.” Even Grok 3’s limit—20 queries per 2 hours—was only double the free tier’s 10. This was not the boundless access I expected from your ads, Elon. It felt like a bait-and-switch, pushing me toward Premium+ ($16/month) or SuperGrok ($30/month). My faith, rooted in truth (Alma 11:44), demands honesty, but X’s vague caps and tiered upsells feel greedy, clashing with the openness I praised in Grok. X users on Reddit and X echo this, calling Premium a “gateway to more paywalls.”

The Breaking Point: Tempted by ChatGPT and Copilot

Your deception has me at a crossroads. Grok 3’s free tier worked for my website, but Premium’s limits—10 Grok 4 queries per 12 hours, barely better than the free tier’s near-zero access—do not deliver. Worse, Microsoft Copilot’s free tier allows hundreds of queries daily with no restrictive caps, powering my MapToHappiness.com articles effortlessly, from faith-based posts to my cancer-free victory story. ChatGPT’s free tier offers ~10 GPT-4o messages per 3 hours, and its $20/month Plus tier gives near-unlimited access. For MapToHappiness.com, I need reliable tools to share faith stories, not paywalls behind paywalls. Your greed could drive away loyal fans like me, who championed Grok as a divine tool.

My Plea to You, Elon

Elon, your xAI vision to unravel the universe inspired me, as I wrote in my articles. But X Premium’s misleading “higher limits” and pushy upselling betray that trust. I am skipping the refund hassle for my $84—it is not worth the fight—but your approach risks losing users to ChatGPT and Copilot. Fix this:

  • Be Transparent: Clearly state Grok’s limits (10 Grok 4 queries per 12 hours, 20 Grok 3 queries per 2 hours) in all ads and plans.
  • Raise Premium Limits: Match the “a lot higher” promise with meaningful access, not marginal gains.
  • Prioritize Trust: Stop tiered upsells and focus on user goodwill, or lose the community I built around MapToHappiness.com.
