The Infinite Atonement of Jesus Christ: A Lift from the Ditch
By Michael B. Nhem, Founder of maptohappiness.com
Have you ever felt stuck, like there’s no way out of a dark, hopeless place? I have a friend, Tom—whose incredible story might just open your eyes to how Jesus Christ’s love can pull us up, no matter how deep we’ve fallen. Tom’s journey through the jungles of Cambodia, crippled and alone, is a powerful picture of how the Atonement works for all of us—reaching back before we were born, touching our lives now, and stretching into eternity. As Latter-day Saints, we call this the infinite Atonement, a truth that sets our faith apart, and I want to share why it matters, using Tom’s life as a guide.
Tom’s Desperate Night
Tom’s story begins during a dark chapter in Cambodia’s history. He was fleeing to Thailand to escape danger, walking by night and sleeping by day to avoid capture. One fateful night, he stepped on a landmine. The blast shattered his body, leaving him crippled, leaning on a cane as he limped through the thick jungle. Days turned into a blur of pain and fear. Near the Cambodia-Thailand border, exhaustion overwhelmed him. In the pouring rain, he slipped into a deep, muddy ditch. Tired, crippled, and soaked, he couldn’t climb out. For days, he lay there, his cries for help swallowed by the jungle—until a stranger heard him. That stranger lowered a small branch, pulled Tom to safety, and gave him a second chance at life. That moment of rescue is where we see Jesus’ hand at work.
Jesus: The Stranger Who Lifts Us All
Tom’s rescue is a living picture of what Jesus does through His Atonement. Just as that stranger saved Tom from the ditch, Jesus lifts us from the pit of sin, death, and despair. But as Latter-day Saints, we believe this Atonement is infinite—it’s not limited to our time on earth. It reaches back to who we were before we were born, works in our lives today, and promises a glorious future. This is a key difference from many traditional Christian beliefs, which often see life starting at conception. We, however, believe we lived with God as spirits before coming to earth, and the Atonement covers that pre-existent life, our present struggles, and our post-mortal destiny.
The Bible hints at this pre-existence in Jeremiah 1:5, where God says, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee.” This tells us God knew us as spirits before we were born, a truth restored through the gospel. Jesus, who existed with us in that pre-existent state, came to earth sinless, yet took upon Himself our sins. Isaiah 53:4-5 declares, “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows… he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities.” In the Book of Mormon, Alma 7:11-12 adds, “He shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind… that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.” His suffering was so vast—bleeding from every pore, as Doctrine and Covenants 19:18 describes—that He could lift us all, like Tom from that ditch, to resurrection and eternal life.
The Infinite Reach of the Atonement
What makes the Atonement infinite? As 2 Nephi 9:7 in the Book of Mormon explains, “It must needs be an infinite atonement—save it should be an infinite atonement this corruption could not put on incorruption.” This means Jesus’ sacrifice covers every soul, from the pre-existence to the resurrection. He lived before us as the premortal Christ, walked among us as the Savior, and will return as King. John 1:1-2 supports this, saying, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.” This “Word” is Jesus, present from the start, making His Atonement timeless.
Unlike some churches that don’t accept pre-existence or post-mortal ordinances, we believe in baptism for the dead, a practice with biblical roots. 1 Corinthians 15:29 asks, “Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?” This verse, often overlooked, shows early Christians performed this ordinance, which the restored gospel revives. It allows those who died without the gospel—like Tom’s ancestors in Cambodia—to accept it in the spirit world, tying the Atonement’s infinite reach to our post-mortal life.
A Personal Connection to the Struggle
Tom’s story resonates with me deeply. My own family fled Cambodia’s horrors, and I know the weight of survival. His crippled walk through the jungle, silent by day to avoid the Khmer Rouge, mirrors the spiritual limping we all experience. Jesus’ Atonement doesn’t just save us from physical pits—it heals our guilt, pain, and mistakes. Hebrews 2:9 says, “He by the grace of God should taste death for every man,” showing His sacrifice covers every individual struggle, past and present. For Tom, that stranger’s branch was a lifeline; for us, Jesus’ hands are the eternal lift.
The Post-Mortal Promise
The Atonement’s infinite nature also promises a post-mortal life. 1 Corinthians 15:21-22 teaches, “For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” This resurrection is for everyone, a gift from Christ’s victory over death. As Latter-day Saints, we believe this extends to the spirit world, where 1 Peter 3:18-20 reveals Jesus “preached unto the spirits in prison,” offering salvation even after death. This post-mortal ministry connects to baptism for the dead, ensuring the Atonement’s reach is complete.
