The Joy of Serving Others:  Where Gods Love Meets Human Hearts

Are you feeling bored, unfulfilled, or wondering how to find purpose in life? The answer lies in serving others. At Map to Happiness, we believe serving others not only lifts their spirits but also fills your heart with joy, aligning with God’s second greatest commandment: “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” (Matthew 22:39). Here’s how serving others can transform your life, backed by scripture and real stories.

Why Serving Others Brings Joy

When you help someone in need—whether they’re sad, distressed, or struggling—you lighten their burden and uplift their spirit. This act of kindness creates a ripple effect: their happiness becomes your happiness. As God promises, “He that watereth shall be watered also himself” (Proverbs 11:25). Serving fills your heart with compassion, turning into deep joy, as Mosiah 2:17 teaches, “When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.” Even more, “The liberal soul shall be made fat” (Proverbs 11:25), showing God’s blessing flows back to you.

Learning from Jesus Christ’s Example

Jesus Christ set the ultimate example of service. Before His crucifixion, He humbly washed His disciples’ feet, saying, “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet” (John 13:14). The Bible is rich with His service—feeding the hungry (Matthew 14:19-21), healing the sick (Luke 4:40), and blessing the weary (Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”). These acts show helping others is a sacred way to live God’s commandments and find joy.

Real-Life Stories of Service

My wife and I have always sought ways to serve, especially as our children grew. One rainy evening after work, I told my boys, “We’re helping my co-worker’s parents move their furniture.” Despite one son’s hesitant “But it’s raining, Dad!”, we got to work. We moved fast, and afterward, my boys beamed, saying, “We’re glad we could help.” The parents’ heartfelt “thank yous” warmed our hearts, fulfilling “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). Years later, I took my daughter, Rachel, to help them move again. We left as happy campers, filled with the joy of service.

When my wife served as Young Women president, she led monthly projects for the young women, like caroling at nursing homes or cooking meals for the elderly. These acts taught our youth that serving brings joy that lasts, echoing “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

How to Start Serving Today

Opportunities to serve are all around you—you just need to keep your eyes open. Recently, while screening visitors at a hospital, I noticed a young woman struggling to change a flat tire. Her friends joined her, but after ten minutes, they were stuck. I was busy, but a kind motorcyclist stopped and fixed the tire in five minutes. Their “virtual” group hug and high-fives (COVID-19 style!) showed the joy of helping others, even in small ways, as “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again” (Proverbs 19:17).

Here are simple ways to start:

  • Look Around: Notice someone needing help, like carrying groceries or fixing a tire.
  • Volunteer: Join community projects, like food drives or nursing home visits.
  • Share Faith: Invite others to explore gospel truths at Map to Happiness or connect via our Knowledge Base.
