They Laughed When I Sipped My Mix Drink—Then Cheered My Cancer-Free Victory!
Michael B. Nhem, Founder of MapToHappiness.Com
Yesterday, I told my wife I would not share this story. After sleeping on it, I changed my mind. On August 29, 2025, my colonoscopy turned fear into triumph. They laughed at my mix drink, then cheered my cancer-free result. I hope my story inspires you. May you say, “Yes! I want it done now!” Eternity is a ring without end. Past fears fade. Present joy shines. My journey reflects a tangible God’s love. Luke 24:39 declares, “Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.” Doctrine and Covenants 130:22 affirms, “The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s; the Son also.” This article shares my story. It invites you to find health and happiness.
Horrible Stories of My Youth
Terror defined my childhood. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge struck Cambodia. Families fled through jungles. By 1979, we reached Thailand’s Kamputh camp. Hunger gnawed at us daily. Spiritual confusion deepened my pain. Churches taught a spirit-only God. This clashed with Genesis 1:26-27: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
In America, friends shared colonoscopy horror stories. Articles described gallons of yukky mix drink. Fasting for 24 hours seemed unbearable. Psalm 23:4 sustained me: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” God felt near. Fear lingered still.
Yesterday’s Triumph Over Fear
Those early terrors echoed later fears. For months, I dreaded a colonoscopy. My wife scheduled an appointment for August. My four children urged me forward. Their love overcame my fears. On Monday and Tuesday, I avoided fruits and vegetables. I savored only clam chowder. The Word of Wisdom guided my discipline. My last meal was at 2 a.m. Thursday, still working. That afternoon, I faced the mix drink. It was the prep solution. My aunt and uncle laughed as I sipped it. I loved it! The trick was simple. I took big swallows without thinking. “You did it!” they cheered. I drank four cups Thursday evening. Four more followed Friday morning. The procedure was swift. The nurse said, “I give you meds.” Ten seconds later, I was out. I woke 45 minutes later. My wife smiled, “It’s done. It went well.” Their cheers echoed her joy. We left the hospital a half hour later. I am cancer-free. John 16:33 declares, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” Doctrine and Covenants 89:18-20 promises, “And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones; And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures; And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.” Yesterday, I overcame fear. A tangible God gave me victory.
Faith in a Tangible God
Faith fueled my courage. The Restoration, through Joseph Smith, revealed truth. Joseph Smith—History 1:17 records, “I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” This confirms a physical Godhead. God’s priesthood gave me strength. Doctrine and Covenants 84:19 states, “And this greater priesthood administereth the gospel and holdeth the key of the mysteries of the kingdom, even the key of the knowledge of God.” In 1997, I used this power to heal a sister. In many special occasions, I baptized people in the temple. I sealed their families for eternity. Their joy mirrored mine yesterday. The pre-existence anchors our purpose. Jeremiah 1:5 declares, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” A tangible God restores our bodies. Alma 40:23 states, “The soul shall be restored to the body, and the body to the soul; yea, and every limb and joint shall be restored to its body; yea, even a hair of the head shall not be lost; but all things shall be restored to their proper and perfect frame.” Doctrine and Covenants 89:18-20 guided my health. My cancer-free victory reflects His plan.
Your Path to a Cancer-Free Victory
Colon cancer strikes many. The American Cancer Society reports over 150,000 new colon-rectal cancer cases yearly in the U.S. Early detection saves lives. My experience was not horrible. The mix drink was manageable. The procedure was quick. I encourage regular checkups. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 states, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” The Word of Wisdom promises health. Honor your body with screenings. Read the Book of Mormon. Moroni 10:4-5 invites, “And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.” Visit ChurchofJesusChrist.org. In 1993, I saw a celestial city in vision. It confirmed a tangible God’s plan. My wife’s love carried me yesterday. Embrace His love.
